A FUN FILLED FAMILY DAY OUT
You couldn’t have written the scene in a Jilly Cooper novel. It was absolutely perfect as the sun shone down upon the spectators, sponsors and polo players for Heroes Polo Day at Tidworth Polo Club. And boy was it a day of adrenaline fuelled excitement, sensational polo and plenty of Champagne and British Polo Gin!
Starting the day of polo action was the Duke of York Cup which is the annual skirmish between the Royal Navy and the RAF. An opening game that clearly showed for the Navy it really was a game of ……… ‘When they were up…. They were up!’
And for the RAF……. ‘When they were down…. They were down!’
The teams paraded with Sqn Ldr Ed Whitechurch bearing the RAF 100 Baton which had just returned from Kabul, to be presented to Air vice Marshall Andy Turner.
The centre piece of the day was the Help for Heroes Match and if the 2017 Heroes Cup match wasn’t inspirational enough you should have been there to witness the skills, grit, determination and massive improvements made in the last year. What a match that saw Peter O’Rourke’s Strategic Shipping team strike that strategic polo passion against Wilsons Solicitors team. Players from both sides that have life changing injuries showed the crowds that they are made of much stronger stuff!
Post match Strategic Shipping’s Peter O’Rourke Commented” I am hugely Proud. Each year they just get better and better, fitter, stronger and more determined. Same again next year”
THE FINAL MATCH of the day Sponsored by Women in Polo.
So the big question for this years 6 goal exhibition match between Women in Polo and the Hackett Army team was…… Will the girls do it for a 3rd year running?
The great joint commentary by Retd Col Simon Ledger and Miles Underwood, revved up the crowd for a much anticipated fight back in the last chukka by the Army.
Now they did mean business but too little too late against the women in polo side with the hat-trick winning WIP 6 Hackett Army 5
And breathe….. That was as close to the wire as you will get! What will happen this year?
For the crowds it was the quickest their hearts would beat watching polo and yet again it took everyone to the edge of their seats. We would like to thank all our sponsors Women In Polo, Canonbury, Fine Wines Direct, Strategic Shipping, Wilsons Solicitors, Team Ethos, Airbus
