UK NARIC Admissions Officer Training (Level 2) - Leeds - 05/06/2019

Following successful Admissions Level 1 training days, many attendees and institutions have expressed interest in a more advanced development day for staff in admissions roles.    Admissions Level 2 is a concentrated day of training that provides deeper understanding and useful practical techniques across four important admissions themes: 

  • Understanding qualifications and evaluating applications: in-depth
  • Understanding accreditation
  • Focus on refusal rates
  • Using official sources to inform decisions and reduce risk.  

Examples and cases from a range of key countries will be introduced and considered as we go through the day, based on feedback from our Admissions Level 1 days. 

Understanding qualifications and evaluating applications: in-depth

Central to the admissions function is the assessment of individual applications, each comprising a person’s qualifications (composed of particular modules/specialisms), together with evidence of skills and experience. This leads to decisions on suitability and ability. This session looks in-depth at how some of the common international qualifications can be assessed, and in particular examines qualifications that are often found confusing. Transcripts will be deconstructed and features such as China’s and Pakistan’s compulsory modules will be considered. 

Important secondary qualifications from key countries will be discussed, including from the Indian system with its different regions and boards. 

Understanding accreditation

Accreditation is a core concept in validating and recognising qualifications. This session aims to build a deeper understanding of accreditation, so that you are confident in your handling of diverse qualifications, institutions and countries and the judgements you make about these.    Models of accreditation are explained, and typologies of institutions. Current topics of concern are addressed: areas where accreditation does not exist (including crisis zones); private providers; and high risk countries. 

Focus on refusal rates

Visa refusal rates are a crucial performance indicator. It is vital that you achieve the lowest refusal rates that you can in your particular market and recruitment circumstances.    This session examines the areas which most commonly cause Home Office refusal, and discusses techniques and processes to make your pre-checking more thorough - and to ensure you evidence your checks, ready for Home Office audit.    This session includes: finance checks and checks on ability to afford; preparing applicants for credibility interviews; and identifying common problems in documents, such as ‘self-translated’ certificates and ‘soft sign-offs’. 

Using official sources to inform decisions and reduce risk

There are many very useful official information and data sources to help you research and evaluate qualifications, to check applications, and to guide your decision-making. Evidencing your use of authoritative sources provides justification and support for your decisions, ready for audit.    This session reviews many very good sources that you can use: Ministry websites; awarding bodies; verification providers; official national statistics (including in some cases national grade distributions). We also review and evaluate some of the non-official rankings and data sites and consider how these might be used. 

The day also includes:

  • Practical workshop sessions
  • Consideration of exemplar applications and cases from different countries
  • An examination of problem areas and grey areas in English proficiency, with experts from IELTS
  • Q&A on practical issues and problems, with Simon Maller of Leeds Trinity University (formerly University of Hull, University of Salford, University of Leeds).
