Spotlight on North America (Core session)

Overview

With substantial growth in the number of international students from the USA and Canada choosing to study in the UK, robust understanding of these two education systems is critical to support admissions decisions. Both countries operate decentralised education systems with responsibility at state, provincial, territorial and local government levels, requiring good understanding of the variations between states and provinces such as at curricular and grading systems.

This session will cover both the USA and Canada; for the USA, the session will focus on secondary education and the many qualifications used to access higher education. We will reflect on recent changes and developments within the USA (including the discontinuation of the SAT subject tests) and consider what this means for admissions. The session also looks at grade 12 level subjects. It considers how school accreditation can be verified.

For Canada, the session will focus on differences by province; it looks at the secondary diplomas from the most populous provinces and provides hints and tips on what to look for in the certification. The session considers how subjects like maths and English can vary by province, a reflection of the modular curriculum.

We look at subjects and indicators that provide best preparation for higher education. The session looks at the various post-secondary certificates and diplomas on offer and looks at those that might be deemed appropriate for access to UK higher education. Both sessions will also cover common undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications and verification approaches.

For all countries, trainers will provide examples of authentic documentation and case studies enabling hands-on and practical learning.
