Evaluating qualifications from Malaysia


This online session will give an overview of the Malaysian education system with a focus on key qualifications and key considerations for making admissions decisions at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

It includes practical guidelines on interpreting documents and grading systems, checking institutional status, and understanding how Malaysian students may be considered for entry to higher education programmes in the UK and overseas.

Target audience

Recommended for university and college staff, professional bodies, recruiters, work permit and visa agencies as well as careers /guidance/ advisers.


  • Understand the broad structure of the Malaysian education system and how key school and undergraduate qualifications compare with the UK's education system
  • Understand high school (SPM / STPM) qualifications typically used for undergraduate admission, grading systems and university admissions in Malaysia
  • Learn about different types of higher education institution
  • Understand the system of accreditation for higher education
  • Learn how to navigate and use the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR) website to check institutional and programmatic accreditation
